Music recommended by James Jones

The Lost Gardens of Heligan by Film & TV ComposerElizabeth Parker

This is a really beautiful piece of music, Elizabeth. The figurations you've used are simple and understated and your harmonies are charming. I also quite like the quality of the strings sound. Clearly they're not meant to be real strings, they are their own instrument. I would however have liked them not to have been accompanying the piano all the way through.

Andes to Amazon by Film & TV ComposerAnne Nikitin

Anne, I think your piece, Andes to Amazon, is brilliant! I have to disagree with the other panelists here, I'm afraid. It's serene, powerful and exciting at different times. Clearly, it's well orchestrated, with great harmonic progressions and performed impeccably by the orchestra. I bet it works well with the images too. Of course, it's all about taste on Screened Music, so each to their own, but I think it's fab. Bravo!

Secrets by Film & TV ComposerAnne Nikitin

This piece moves and inspires me. It's simple, introspective, sad and dignified. The string performances are great and add depth. It would've been wonderful to have a real piano too.

Ultimate Outdoor Britain (series title) by Film & TV ComposerAnne Nikitin

Love it! It's punchy and exciting, just right for the brief.

Falcon on the Kill by Film & TV ComposerAnne Nikitin

Your best work. Excellent build up of tension through the drums, followed by other instruments. It's minimal and I'm sure you're giving plenty of space for the on screen action. It's got real edge.

Coast Road by Film & TV ComposerAndy Quin

I love this - brings back great memories of the innocence of the 80s, the time before irony. I feel so nostalgic listening to it. Of course it's brilliantly written and performed too.

Gyr Mother Exhausted by Film & TV ComposerAnne Nikitin

Less is so often more and this piece exemplifies this. But even though it starts off plain, the harmony you inject in the middle is really powerful and gets me in my tummy.

Powder by Film & TV ComposerAnne Nikitin

Cool, hard-edged, dramatic... this cue ticks a lot of boxes. All clearly mixed, with interest at every turn. Good work.

Breakout by Film & TV ComposerJohn Llewellyn Brees

John, I really like your use of sound effects in your tracks. It's something I think I should perhaps do more of - you've inspired me. It adds an extra dimension. The music part of this track is brilliant too! Kind of 80s (very current) but in an updated way which is subtle. Love it!

Esso Ad by Film & TV ComposerAlex Baranowski

Love this, Alex. The quality of the sounds you've used and the mixing is well nice. Simple, elegant. Good work.

Apollo 8 Takeoff by Film & TV ComposerAlex Baranowski

This is an unpredicatble piece. I love the way it twists and turns, and surprises. Lovely contemporary style. As always, very clear, simple, elegant production. I'm jealous!!

Feature Comment

"It is indeed offensive to be told to work for free (rarely do producers ask if it is acceptable). However, the choices are radically limited: if one doesn't compose (/record/mix) for free, one does not......"
