Screened Music News - Master Class Series Overview
A huge thank you to Apple and Pro Audio Development Manager, Chris Thompson, for hosting the first of our professional development events – a series of technical master classes at the Apple EBC, and to presenter John Moores for sharing his extensive knowledge and pearls of wisdom.
These master classes were a fantastic opportunity for Screened Music composers to explore some of the many technical issues faced by composers today and provided a unique platform for the exchange of ideas. They also gave us a great excuse to get together in the pub afterwards and put faces to names!
The series began with an overview of digital audio mixing techniques – EQ, compression, mastering and a quick look at how to mix and master in surround sound. The second class explored some of the more creative techniques available to composers, delving into the world of effects processing and sound design through expressive use of reverbs, delays, filters and a quick dabble in side-chain processing. The third and final class served as a brief introduction to synthesis methods with a look at some of the useful tools out there in the market today that might be a worthy addition to our sound palettes.
A highlight for many was the guest appearance of composer David Lowe who took us on a fascinating journey through the technical processes involves in creating his music – including the theme for Panorama and a sneak preview of his forthcoming re-scoring for BBC News which airs in April.
Thank you to everyone who joined us and made these classes the exciting, interactive experience they turned out to be.

Just wanted to say that I attended the three master classes, and whilst I personally didn't learn anything new (although you do always pick up lots of little gems!) the experience was excellent and it was good to hear from experts the different ways to do certain things. And for a techno nerd like me it was really good to have the nuts and bolts of synthesis explained in a way that was understandable. (Thanks John!)
The session with David Lowe was great – its not often you get a chance to listen to someone who is ‘really there’ so to speak, and get an insiders look into the real working world of composing – invaluable.
I'd recommend to all SMN composers that if you have the time and not up to your neck in deadlines (we all wish!!), try and make any future classes.
Thanks again for the invitation - I look forward to future events.
